Klingon Academy Klingon Star Ships - Written By Donald Burns
The Klingon fleet is comprised of ten vessel classes (nine warships and a shuttle) currently in active service. Klingon vessels historically have featured weaker shields than equivalent Federation vessels, but they tend to have equal or greater hull integrity and stronger weapons. However, their photons, in particular, have been weaker than Federation torpedoes, primarily because of a shortage of properly skilled engineers and munitions on Kronos One. However, a new type of heavy photon has recently been developed by Klingon engineers, one far more powerful than the standard photon torpedoes used by many other civilizations. This weapon is rumoured to be double the strength of a standard photon. In addition, a new weapon, the frequency modulated particle accelerator, has been recently developed as well. The FMPA, or particle cannon, is roughly as powerful as a heavy photon, and seems to cause significant bleed through damage even against shielded targets. All Klingon ships cloak except for the battleship.

The largest and by far the most massive vessel in the Klingon Fleet is the Sword of Kahless Battleship (qey IS betleH). Presently, only two of these vessels are in active service, one of those being the flagship of the fleet, commanded by the Chief of Staff. The other has been completed as of 1 Jan 2293, but has not completed her shakedown cruise. Two more hulls are under construction, scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2294. The Klingon High Council has balked at authorizing additional funds for these gargantuan vessels, citing the high cost and unknown return on investment for the Klingon people. This vessel is noted for her chunky design and six warp nacelles. It has been confirmed that she carries a massive assault phaser, capable of cracking the shields of starbases and other heavily fortified targets.
SPECS:
Length: 686 meters
Mass: 2,470,000 metric tonnes
Crew: 700
Marines: 70
Maximum Impulse: 1,050 kellicams per second
Hull Rating: 6.6
Shield Rating: 126.0
Maneuverability Rating: .30/.10
WEAPONS:
Forward: 6 disruptors, 4 heavy photons, 1 assault phaser
Aft: 5 disruptors, 2 heavy photons
Port/Starboard: 4 disruptors each
Tactical Summary: These vessels, like the slightly smaller Accuser class Dreadnoughts, are painfully slow but carry a huge weapons array. As such, any enemy vessel encountering an SOK would be wise to not attempt any attack runs from the bow. The ship is quite sluggish and a wise commander will veer to the dorsal or ventral aspects of the vessel to limit damage from the SOK's powerful weapons. The assault phaser is a dangerous but slow weapon, requiring thirty seconds to charge after each use. In addition, the vessel can sustain feedback damage from the use of this weapon.

The enormous ‘Accuser' class dreadnought (pumwI’) is currently the second most powerful and dangerous vessel in the Klingon fleet. Measuring approximately 600 meters in length, this massive vessel strikes fear into the hearts of all who encounter her. With five warp nacelles, she has tremendous power reserves and her shields are amongst the strongest in the galaxy. Presently, only a handful of these vessels are in service, serving as the command flagships of the various Klingon naval fleets. Only the most experienced commanders earn the right to command one of these monstrosities, making them all the more dangerous. These ships will always be found at the heart of a fleet of D7s and BOPs, and never alone. As of 1 January 2293, six of these vessels are in service, and two more are in trials. An additional four hulls have been authorized by the Council, but those keels have not been laid yet as of this writing, primarily due to funding difficulties within the Empire. Some feel that this vessel is actually the most beautiful and elegant of all Klingon vessels currently in service.
SPECS:
Length: 610 meters
Mass: 1,250,000 metric tonnes
Crew: 600
Marines: 60
Maximum Impulse: 1,140 kellicams per second
Hull Rating: 4.6
Shield Rating: 83.0
Maneuverability Rating: .31/.14
WEAPONS:
Forward: 5 disruptors, 2 heavy photons, 1 AMFP
Aft: 4 disruptors, 1 heavy photon
Port/Starboard: 2 disruptors each
Tactical Summary: These ships are powerful but quite slow. Although one has never been lost in battle, tactical specialists believe one could be taken down by warships who stay away from her formidable front array of weapons. Even then, they should be prepared to take a lot of damage from her secondary weapons. Also, the attacking warships will need to deal with her cloaking device, as this is the largest Klingon ship that can cloak. The Accuser, in conjunction with the Emperor class BattleCruiser, replaces the unsuccessful Ber’taa class of "Advanced Heavy Cruiser," a variant that suffered from a distinct lack of available main power and a vulnerable starboard warp nacelle. In particular, warp containment would fail and the entire ship would typically explode if the starboard nacelle was damaged. These problems hopefully have been rectified by Klingon engineers with these newer warship classes.

Information on the Klingon Heavy Battlecruiser is extremely limited, although it is thought that her weapons loadout will be slightly less than the discontinued Ber’taa’s armament loadout for this vessel. Her class designation is the Emperor class (VoDleh). This vessel, to some degree, was designed by Klingon naval engineers to replace, in conjuction with the Accuser DN, the abandoned Ber’taa hull. It does carry one of the new heavy photon tubes recently made available by Klingon scientists. It also is a four engined vessel, sporting two nacelles above and below the rear section of the ship. (Historian's note: This vessel may have been a direct predecessor to the Vor'cha-class attack cruisers of seventy-plus years in the future).
SPECS:
Length: 412 meters
Mass: 670,000 metric tonnes
Crew: 450
Marines: 55
Maximum Impulse: 1,230 kellicams per second
Hull Rating: 3.7
Shield Rating: 57.5
Maneuverability Rating: .33/.19
WEAPONS:
Forward: 4 disruptors, 1 heavy photon, 2 particle cannons
Aft: 3 disruptors, 2 particle cannons
Port/Starboard: 3 disruptors each
Tactical Discussion: These ships are powerful, with decent shields and weapons, but average hull strength. They pack greater firepower than the equivalent Federation battlecruiser, the Excelsior, but give up shield and maximum speed advantages for this greater firepower. They are extremely competent ships, and rare enough that command of one is only granted to the best commanders in the Klingon fleet. They tend to be sector flagships when a dreadnought is not available, which is often. Currently, there are about two dozen hulls in service, with another six under construction at any given time. Build time is considerably less than the larger hulls in the fleet, as this ship is built on a lengthened and strengthened D7 platform. However, the ships share few components, so build time is well over two years from the laying of the keel until trials.

Information on the Klingon Command Cruiser, currently designated the "Warrior’s Anger" Class (SuvwI’ Qeh), is presently quite limited. This class is essentially a heavily upgraded K’Tinga class with additional weapons and armour. This vessel features three warp nacelles, with the third slung below her aft section in the center of the ship. The Klingons saved a great deal of money and time by adapting the D7 platform for both the Emperor and Warrior's Anger warship classes, as the build time is considerably shorted by the cost and material savings. By comparison, the Accuser dreadnoughts take over twice as long to build as the Emperor.
SPECS:
Length: 336 meters
Mass: 300,000 metric tonnes
Crew: 350
Marines: 45
Maximum Impulse: 1,320 kellicams per second
Hull Rating: 2.6
Shield Rating: 47.8
Maneuverability Rating: .37/.24
WEAPONS:
Forward: 2 disruptors, 2 photons, 1 resonator cannon
Aft: 2 disruptors, 1 photon
Port/Starboard: 2 disruptors each
Tactical Discussion: These ships, while found in slightly greater numbers than the Emperor, are still fairly rare and not commonly situated throughout the fleet. About thirty hulls are in service, although many of the hulls under construction have been diverted to Emperor loadouts because of heightened tensions with the Federation in the last year or so. Like most Klingon ships, they feature strong weapons, at the expense of shields and all-around versatility of comparable Federation ships. They also have a fairly low maximum speed for their class size.

The Klingon D7, also known as "K'tinga" Cruisers, presently serve as the backbone of the Klingon fleet, with over one hundred hulls in service, some dating from the 2260’s. The D7-a was an improved version of the older D7 with a cloaking device. As of 1 January 2293, all Klingon D7s in service have been refitted with this significant tactical upgrade. Using the cloaking device, they will often lie in wait silently, then uncloak and begin their attack runs. These vessels were briefly shared with the Romulan Empire in the 2260's (which is when the Klingons acquired their low grade cloaking technology), but only a few of those Romulan D7-Rs have been in service, the Romulans preferring their own ship designs such as the Imperial Hawk and Warbird classes presently found in the Romulan fleet.
SPECS:
Length: 244 meters
Mass: 210,000 metric tonnes
Crew: 300
Marines: 40
Maximum Impulse: 1,410 kellicams per second
Hull Rating: 2.1
Shield Rating: 32.3
Maneuverability Rating: .39/.28
WEAPONS:
Forward: 2 disruptors, 1 photon, 2 heavy disruptors
Aft: 2 disruptors, 1 photon
Port/Starboard: 2 disruptors each
Tactical Summary: These vessels can be dangerous when encountered alone. To add to this danger, Klingon vessels often travel in pairs or triples, so beware if you run across just one. There may be another, just waiting to uncloak on your six and unleash a volley of torpedoes. Effective battle tactics have included ramming, as equivalent Federation medium cruisers usually are constructed better than the D7. This is a risky tactic, though. While agile, they are not swift vessels, and their shields fail quickly under heavy photon attacks. Hull integrity is about average. Beware of the aft torpedo launcher when following one closely during battle.

The Klingon Light Cruiser, called the Relentless class, is a new hull recently introduced at the annual Klingon war games ceremony in 2292. Her acceleration speed is excellent, the best of any Klingon cruiser. The hull’s principal design dates back to the 2250’s, when the D6 cruisers were retired in favour of the present day D7 mainstay vessels. Of course, this new class is all new from the keel up, and only faintly resembles the D6 cruisers of long ago. In simulated wargames, these vessels were more than a match for the highly vaunted Miranda class light cruisers from the Federation, primarily because of their substantially stronger hulls and larger size.
SPECS:
Length: 198 meters
Mass: 157,000 metric tonnes
Crew: 250
Marines: 30
Maximum Impulse: 1,500 kellicams per second

Shield Rating: 39.3
Maneuverability Rating: .42/.32
WEAPONS:
Forward: 4 disruptors, 1 photon
Aft: 2 disruptors
Port/Starboard: 2 disruptors each
Tactical Discussion: The light cruiser is an excellent package of versatile capabilities. The vessel is capable of long-range operations from base without support and has enough power to slug it out with larger ships. Although the warship's power to weight ratio is not the equivalent of the highly regarded Insurrection, they are often teamed together for quick, precision strikes at an enemy target.

The Klingon Destroyer, or the Insurrection class (QuD), is a substantially larger version of the venerable Bird of Prey introduced over twenty years ago. Orbital factories around Kronos are said to be churning these hulls out at the rate of one per month, a phenomenal speed given the inherent shipbuilding limitations the Klingon Empire has suffered from in the last several decades. The Insurrection gains in speed and offensive power what it loses in armour and shield strength, but it is not a vessel to be regarded lightly.

The Insurrection class Destroyers are noted for their extensive forward weapons loadout, more powerful than that of the light cruiser. This vessel is designed for pure combat and, combined with her high maximum impulse speed and superior agility, makes her a deadly opponent. These vessels often serve as escort vessels for slower Klingon dreadnoughts and battleships, and can take down a cruiser with comparative ease. They are also used for attack raids on shipping and interdiction efforts behind enemy lines. They are the bane of convoy escorts, and many freighters have been lost to these diabolical warships. Klingons consider service on these vessels to be of the highest honor, and many captains have turned down promotions to remain in this warship's command.

The Klingon Frigate is the throwaway hull of the Klingon fleet. Called the Suspicious class, Klingon crews often deride the vessel’s capabilities as being "suspiciously unsuccessful." The vessel dates from the 2270’s, and presently about three hundred hulls are still in service. These vessels are fairly slow and ponderous for their small size, but they make up in versatility what they lack in offensive weapons. They can be easily configured as a troop transport, a sensor/picket ship for fleet combat, and an armed freighter ship.

The Klingon Escort class vessel is commonly referred to as the Bird of Prey, often shortened to "BOP". These ships are small, fast, common Klingon vessels, well known and feared throughout the galaxy. Equipped with a cloaking device, they often sneak up on their unsuspecting targets and unleash a furious, often unprovoked attack. BOP's have brought much larger vessels to their knees, so they are not to be dismissed casually. These ships are cheap and easy to manufacture. Therefore, they are plentiful.
SPECS:
Length: 92 meters
Mass: 22,000 metric tonnes
Crew: 12
Marines: 5
Maximum Impulse: 1,770 kellicams per second
Hull Rating: 1.1
Shield Rating: 17.0
Maneuverability Rating: .54/.59
WEAPONS:
Forward: 2 light disruptors, 1 photon
Tactical Summary: The BOP is very hard to hit when moving at full impulse. As a result, an effective battle tactic has been to capture them with a strengthened tractor beam. Once fixated in one spot, their weak shields and hulls collapse quickly under heavy fire. Another weakness endemic to the BOP is the fact that, when they
come to a dead stop, there is a slight lag before their powerful impulse engines can get them moving again. The warp systems are housed in the large wings, which are easy to hit. If you can get one to slow down or stop, this is an excellent time to slip in a few torpedoes if in the proper range. BOPs hunt in packs, often five or more, for strength and protection. Klingons view service on a BOP as the pinnacle of honor and battle glory. As with any cloaked vessel, they are vulnerable to attacks when engaging and disengaging the cloak. There has been a rumour that a prototype bird of prey which can fire while cloaked has been successfully tested by the Klingon Empire. If this is true, this would be a stunning achievement by Klingon science.

In simulated wargames, these vessels were more than a match for the highly vaunted Miranda class light cruisers from the Federation, primarily because of their substantially stronger hulls and larger size.
SPECS:
Length: 198 meters
Mass: 157,000 metric tonnes
Crew: 250
Marines: 30
Maximum Impulse: 1,500 kellicams per second
Hull Rating: 2.2

SPECS:
Length: 153 meters
Mass: 60,000 metric tonnes
Crew: 50
Marines: 25
Maximum Impulse: 1,590 kellicams per second
Hull Rating: 2.0
Shield Rating: 36.5
Maneuverability Rating: .48/.44
WEAPONS:
Forward: 4 disruptors, 1 photon, 1 particle cannon

- transport/freighter vessel
The Klingon Frigate is the throwaway hull of the Klingon fleet. Called the Suspicious class, Klingon crews often deride the vessel’s capabilities as being "suspiciously unsuccessful." The vessel dates from the 2270’s, and presently about three hundred hulls are still in service. These vessels are fairly slow and ponderous for their small size, but they make up in versatility what they lack in offensive weapons. They can be easily configured as a troop transport, a sensor/picket ship for fleet combat, and an armed freighter ship.

The lack of photon torpedoes renders this vessel less of a threat than the much smaller BOP, which actually replaced this hull for combat purposes in the 2270’s.

Klingon attack shuttles are not suitable for deep space operations by themselves. They are sometimes found on carriers and near Klingon bases. Fast and agile, their weapons are not strong enough to pose much of a threat to all but the weakest vessels, however, it is rumoured that the Klingon shuttle will soon be upgraded with a heavier class (a photon tube) weapon in the near future.
