'it is the power that reigns in rampant scientific exploration, and it is also the power that preserves life by opposing abortion. Especially in the light of its pro-life stance, by contrast you have to define the pro-choice movement as one that more or less favors death.' I'm sorry but I fail to see your point here, as far as I'm concerned any limitation on the expansion of our scientific knowledge is against the best interests of humanity and stifles our progress as a species and our enlightenment as a society. Let me put it another way then: The liberal and democratic philosophy is not perfect and niether can it solve all of man's problems, and it would be fallacious and arrogant for us liberals to assume that we are the cure-all and end-all for the entire universe. Or put even another way, in as much as the right wing can be (and has been) responsible for death, suffering, and oppression, the left wing can be responsible for it as well but in a different form and from a different angle, specifically starting with ideas that life is cheap and that we are nothing but machines. The liberal ideology, as it stands now, may be pro-choice, but it is also in its way pro-death as well with issues like abortion. Put even another way, take the logical evolution of a totally left-wing high-authoritarian atheist regime and see what you get. You get the Romulans, who take their children away from their parents at birth and the state raises them, and the weak and handicapped are just simply killed. This in its own way can be described as a culture of death, and they also end up viewing the rest of the universe and others as simply prey, hence the Bird of Prey motif. Not really a nice way to live, imo. Like I said, promoting a "culture of death" is what we liberals have to be careful about. If vigilence is the price of freedom, then we have to constantly be on our guard to make sure that we don't think life is cheap, lest we become soemthing akin to the Romulans, and you can't logically do this without having some kind of spiritual belief or a belief in man's worth and even perhaps a soul. That's what I meant by the evil of going to far to the left. Like I said, a pure and total atheist philosophy can end up creating a meaningless or harsh view of the world. If everybody is meaningless then it is harder to argue that you have to be nice to everyone. It is also harder to argue that one should not commit suicde right here and now. That's why I linked this kind of thinking to the way Gene acted towards Grace, and also that it is ultimately non-conducive to creating a better society for all and reducing the hurt in the world. Isn't this just reiterating what I said about a totally egocentric atheist being harder to reign in than a religious egomaniac? Even Pat Robertson was made to realize he had to apologize for what were stupid remarks, and that happened within just a few days. I don't know how many years or how much education would be required to make an atheist recant, but I bet it would be quite a bit.

Well..simply put...on the extremes are the fanatics..and fanaticism is the real evil..Stalin, Hitler, and Osama Bin Laden were and are fanatics with their own agenda's using their beliefs to further personal gain..and their own twisted version of the world as it should be..
Heck way back in the 70's, in the Star Trek fan scene there were rumors regarding Grace and Gene regarding the "casting couch" and a possible "date rape" thing...but as you stated..it was hushed up rather quickly when anyone brought it up. ( I guess they didn't want to risk not having Star Trek revived due to a failing moral standard by Gene)...
I'm glad the Grace has put this behind her and has gone ahead with her life...as TOS actors are now a dying breed..she maybe the last series regular left alive at the end..wouldn't that be ironic..that the only main character dropped out of the series would be the last one left alive?

I know this is an OLD thread, but have any of you read this book: Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, by Herbert F. Solow, & Robert H. Justman ? There's rather damning evidence here and it is mentioned that rock polishing is one of Gene's hobbies and that he has a rock tumbler.

Much as I find Gene Roddenberry to be a Neanderthal when it came to women who was the ultimate example of a sleazy casting couch producer in the tradition of movie moguls like Daryl F. Zanuck (the blunt truth is that Majel Barrett was the TV version of Bella Darvi and Irina Demich. An actress of little real talent who owed her career *entirely* to who she slept with), I think one piece of evidence that exonerates him from this matter is the fact that the Cushman book has a memo indicating Gene was interested in bringing her back for a guest shot and I can not imagine him doing that so soon afterwards if he had been the guilty party.
On the matter of atheism, I will say that yes, being religious is no guarantee you will be good, because after all we are told in Romans that "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God". But that said, Roddenberry has always come across as a man whose atheism was motivated by a desire to live a guilt-free existence when it came to maximizing sexual pleasure. And he chose to then cloak that under a veneer of religion being this supposedly childish thing that a "progressive" human nature would outgrow the need for (which is claptrap that comes straight out of the handbooks of the Jacobin French who gave us the Reign of Terror and the guillotine in the name of their "Enlightened" approach to society) when in fact it was something that only conveniently suited his personal, self-centered needs.
The real tragedy is that this is the same man who was talented enough to write the moving Christmas episode "The Hanging Cross" for "Have Gun Will Travel" which IMO remains the best piece of writing for TV he ever did, and yes that includes Star Trek.

I know I'm way late to this thread, but Nimoy also wrote about Gene's stone-polishing hobby in his book, I Am Spock. Putting all these pieces together (Whitney's description of the gift of a polished stone and how she had confided the whole entire story to Nimoy), it seems pretty clear that Gene was The Executive in question. As for ejp's mention of a memo indicating that Gene was interested in bringing her back for a guest shot, there are many ways that could have happened. Simplest explanation, it was an insincere memo written to save face with the people who had no idea what had happened and felt she deserved some consideration. He could have easily penned that memo in order to look better, with no true intention of bringing her back at that point.

Oh, one more thing. I read earlier in this thread that some posters would have expected The Executive to take better care of Whitney after having raped her, but if I remember her description of the incident correctly, The Executive had some performance issue that prevented him from finishing, and he became very enraged as a result. I'm not saying it's right, but in his mind, I could see his inability to perform, and the resulting embarrassment he must have retained over that point, exonerating him from any sense of personal responsibility that might have otherwise been present.
