Frankly, the Fed DD has a shuttle, and no obvious hanger. It must use a drop bay as well.
If you look at Lord Schtupps DD, that has a proper bay that I prefer to think of as a retrofit.
And then we have Mudd's recent take on the Saladin DD, with it's groovy hanger bay. Clearly a retrofit hanger bay, although the warp Nacelle is very retro.

Yeah the location of the Franz DD shuttlew bay always bothered me as well, and I think I took it for granted that it was up top somewhere, but wherever it is it has to be placed "offside" because there's nowhere else to put it unless it's aft of the BC deck. That personally bothers me from a design and practicality standpoint, which is why I say if you don't want to create a bay for it centerline like Schtupp did, it's better to flip the nacelle to the top and put bay doors bottom/center/aft of the saucer. I was also thinking of the ODN concept and I decided that by the year 2200 when it appears, it should probably have newer-looking skin, moving into the grey tones and using less armor and more like TOS...but not quite TOS yet of course.

i think the shuttlebay could be behind the bridge like on Jackill's Excelsior era Loki class destroyer but in TOS style it maybe looks odd on an TOS ship but ships of the line don't have to be looking good only, they should be build for their purpose and not to please the eye.

Excuse the crudity of it for now, but the idea is that the YDN (which becomes the ODN which is the immediate predecessor to the DN) uses Detroyat-style parts since it is a turn-of-the-century ship appearing 20 yrs after the GCA but also 20 years before the Detroyat. I may have to style the engines so that they look more like refits of the older GCA-type and not like a completely new model. Note the central pylon is now straight. Gives me a basis for what the 12-pt engine looks like circa 2200. The rounded bottom of the saucer also foreshadows the shape of "The Cage" Connie. The idea is that this ship should have many similarities to the Archon/Baton/Detroyat series.

Atra great work with the Detroyat Saucer. Here's a suggestion to ponder rather than have the 3rd warp engine struck to the Saucer ala Federation class why not have it connect to Saucer secondary hull Dorsal. it could be a progression the Tritium class had a 3rd warp nacelle in line with the other 2 and connected to them next one would be connected to the secondary hull then works its way up to the primary hull. ;D

That's an interesting suggestion, but the problem I have with the Tritium is that since all three nacelles are attached to the sec hull, that leaves the saucer without one, whereas it could be a warp-capable lifeboat otherwise. That's maybe the reason why the Tritium was a failed ship if I recall the Spaceflight Chronology text correctly. As for progression, glad you're thinking ahead, as I do. My plan is this: After the ODN you have the Federation Reference Series DN as the basic DN, the one with the not-so-large saucer. After that for the DNH etc you have the Franz DN with the larger/bulkier looking saucer. As always, one of my goals is to merge the popular fanon with canon and my own contributions. I figure this is the best way to resolve the "different-looking DN" problem. If you have suggestions, please let me know!

heh. . .my personal view is that the three engined dreadnaughts shouldn't have a progression. Besides the SFB material. . .why would we think Fed DN's existed prior to the Federation class dreadnaught?
