Here's my idea: Rather than vocal communication, they communicate as gods would, which is by telepathy, using images in their minds. The way they percieve themselves to be is perfect, hence a circle, but they have something about them that sticks out, maybe a hand that likes to interfere in the mortal world, hence the "tail"" of the Q. The Roman letter Q is the closest common image to this in human terms, and so that's what they call themselves to be understood by humans.

Makes sense to me.
I remember in the first appearance of Q, he breifly appeared as a floating snake. (very breifly)
The coiled snake image probably was a physical representation of "Q" symbology, but the alpha and omega has been represented with a snake consuming itself (head biting tail)
Just a thought. (I am also extremely tired as I type this so I hope what I am typing make some sort of sense)
There was more to the snake image but its been some time since I saw the episode. I wonder if there where any other things to ponder in that scene...
I vaguely remember it being in something or on something.

I always figured that when the Qs decided to screw around with mortals, they decided they needed a "Funny" or "Original" name. They found a random language and took something from it. It just so happens that this directly, or indirectly translated to Q in english.

Excellent observation about the snake! It was in the Garden of Eden that a snake screwed around with human destiny and enticed Eve to eat the fruit. So the tail of the letter Q can literally represent that snake in Eden.

That is my new belief on Q.......But I always liked the idea that they artbitarily picked something they liked the sound of.

My feeling is they would imbue some things with meaning, especially their own name. They're like dieties who are pranksters, in that they love to see if a people are smart enough to figure something out, be it a riddle or a puzzle.
