First of all, the leader of the high council, Velos, is obvioulsy George Bush! Trying to start a war under false pretenses? Hmmm.
Why did his minions call him "Excellency"? That's a term for an emperor or a pope. Is the basic government structure of the Vulcans a kind of monarchy? Unless there are senators around which would indicate a republic, it could very well be. Kind of surprising if it is.
Is it just me or do a lot of the Vulcans just look like caucasian humans with bad mushroom haircuts? The Vulcans in TOS always had an exotic look to them; dark hair with interesting eyeshadow sometimes...and this illusion was sometimes helped by them speaking in slight accents, especially the older ones, like T'Pau in "Amok Time" and the priestess in ST:III.
But now they just look and sound like like Americans! I don't think they even bothered with the eye shadow. And the young T'Pau in this episode...just a spunky brunette with curly hair, not Vulcanish at all.
It may sound like I'm criticisizing looks, and I guess I am. Because it all just made me feel like I was watching an episode of Blake's 7 or Farscape, and I really hate those shows because the actors had no talent in escaping from their own "humanness" for the roles, in the way they spoke and the way they acted. No matter what they did, they were like Americans (or Brits) going about their business in their usual way. The only exception I can give is to the actor in Farscape who plays Scorpio....he at least had an interesting expression on his face most of the time, but that may have been due to the make up or something (you'd scowl too if they placed serated teeth in your mouth).
Good alien acting in Trek: The Ferengi in DS 9. Now they were actors who were conscious of the fact that they had to escape their humanness for the roles. Kudos to them. In fact, I was rarely disappointed with a Ferengi performance on that show. Another is Gul Dukat when he first appeared in TNG "The Wounded" when they were chasing down the USS Phoenix. He had a smile and a deviousness to him that really made me feel like there was reptile in his soul!
I believe "Enterprise" has mastered special effects, but the frontier they should be breaking to make it complete is to get the actors to convince the audience that we are watching aliens and not Americans doing their usual thing. I mean at least encourage some kind of accent, for Christ's sake. I realize the characters are meant to be walking around with universal translator implants or whatnots so communication is not a problem, but that didn't stop the great alien performances in previous Trek from using accents and actions that brought out the alieness of their characters.
Even Ilia, who was a Deltan, spoke with an accent! And she sure looks more human than a Vulcan.
