What is it?
My theory is that it's an ID creature, which is why no one has been able to see it. Remember "Forbidden Planet"?
That island has some wierd geomagnetic circumstances and peoples' negative energy has created the monster...not just the energy from this group of survivors, but from previous planecrashes on that island as well.

Comical Answer: It's Tom Hanks.
Serious Answer: Actually, I agree with Atra. Some powerful psychic has allowed a dangerous beast to manifest from his mind.

What stumps me is that the mysterious 16-year-old transmission from the previous group of crashees is still going strong after all that time, jamming the signal that the present survivors are trying to send.
What is powering it? What could power it? It has to be getting power from somepace....My guess is that wherever the transmitter is that it's hooked up to some natural electrical source...or some kind of man-improved arrangement that creates the required potential difference to generate a current.
Are we going to involve aliens? I hope not...I hope the real answer, if they ever give us one, steers clear of that.

Holy frak!
Who was the grey-haired man in the dark blue suit off in the distance, and moreover why was he wearing WHITE shoes, and why did I get the impression that his suit was sort of old-fashioned?
And how did Locke survive an encounter with the Monster, and why isn't he telling anyone about it?
And how is it that he can walk after the crash when he was a cripple before?
----------------------------------------------------
How about this for a theory: It all comes down to some kind of wierd Em quality about the island...this explains how the old distress signal is being amplified so powerfully, how Locke received his miracle cure (presumably to his nervous system), and the monster is like what Luke encountered on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back...it's a manifestation of someone's worst fears, being made into "flesh" somehow by the aforementioned EM qualities (perhaps by amplifying psychic ability). Since Locke's worst fear was his being a cripple and not being able to do anything, the monster didn't really register as anything when he encountered it, which is why he didn't get killed.

Holy double frak!
I just realized the whole island may be a special place that is somehow geared for something akin to an Australian aboriginal "walkabout" where a person walks about in the wilderness and overcomes trials and even encounters visions and spiritual forces. He can encounter either enlightenment or terror, depending on his state of mind. Locke was sort of leaning towards the enlightened side and was on a spiritual quest even before he landed on the island, which is why the "monster" didn't kill him....instead of terror he encountered enlightenment, which is why he says in Episode 5: "I have seen into the heart of this island...and what I saw was beautiful."
Jack's hardest trial was his father, which is why an image of his father keeps appearing to him and bids him to come hither...Jack has to catch up with him and deal with him somehow for his personal spiritual quest to be over.
Getting intersting!
