Are there going to be just 12 episodes this season?

No, 13. These last few are a three part arc, Utopia being the first part obviously.
"The Sound Of Drums" airs on the 23rd here, then "Last Of The Time Lords" on the 30th.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Utopia, although I'm still not convinced by the choice ro play the regenerated Master.
My only minor gripe is that the reunion of Jack with the TARDIS seen in the Torchwood S1 finale doesn't gel well with the events we saw in the pre-title sequence of Utopia, but perhaps that'll be explained away somehow.

OK, I've not watched it yet, but are my eyes deceiving me as I look at the promo pics, or is that actually Sir Derek Freaking Jacobi in this ep?

Yep, that is most definitely Sir Derek

Cool. Wonder how they got him to do the show--not exactly the Royal Shakespeare Company...

Derek Jacobi has already provided the voice of one of the 'alternative' Doctors in Doctor Who Unbound "Deadline", and the voice of the Master in the webcast "Scream of the Shalka", so his involvement in the new series isn't that big a departure for him.

Wow, even cooler. Been a fan of his ever since my mis-spent youth, studying theatre back in college.
