Technically the Enterprise would have six phasers facing forward- there are two just above the bottom sensor, and two more on either side of the top on the primary hull (though I thought everyone knew this...). If we take SFB/SFC's arcs for canon, then it would be possible to fire all six phasers forward at the asteroid. I won't believe in rear photon torpedoes/phasers until I see evidence of them on the physical model. Everything since TNG trek has taken liberties with how TMP/TOS ships are presented for the sake of theatrics. Ah but the original model(s) never had anything that looked like phaser emitters even at what I refer to as "position #1" where it fired those blue beams all the time. Then it begs the question- did the shooting model have ANY obvious weapons ports, anywhere?

Seen the Smithsonian restoration project photos and it wouldn't appear so.

Looking at the photos at Ex Astris Scienta, there are three knobs of some sort on the rim of the sensor dome. One is facing forward, which would put it in just the right position to fire the phasers seen on screen.

the tos model, its hard to view anything on it. but the tmp model we can see under the hull 4 phaser emitter and 2 over the door of the shuttle. i was also looking at the damage model for st3 and notice that it got no impulse engine on it
