At the risk of sounding like an "old fogie". I would suggest that historically STAR TREK XI will rank right up there along with STAR TREK I as an example of how NOT to make a Star Trek movie.
(Abrams did not give a rat's ass about "canon" or accommodating Star Trek fans or "continuity" or anything -- he really didn't know/care about what this show was all about.) Remember STAR TREK: INSURRECTION -- is it worth it to abandon your ideals, just because it is "popular"?
My view is that, in the future, there will be films WITHOUT the "USS Edselprise" that will "rejuvenate" the franchise without doing the nonsensical crap that this film did. When that occurs, new fans will appreciate that Atrahasis and the other fans on this website "did not go softly into that good night" and pointed out that "the emperor had no clothes"...

That was the whole idea. This was a reboot, that is, they wanted to start over from scratch. The point was to get rid of the old cannon so they could do whatever they wanted. So far this film is getting good reviews. Even Bernd Schneider said that he enjoyed the film, despite being a purist who hates the very idea of a reboot. If the box-office returns keep up there will almost certainly be a sequel. Unfortunately, unless this film suddenly tanks, this is the new Star Trek, and the classic Trek universe will live only in our hearts, our videos, and in syndication.
And I liked TMP. It was a bit too long, but the over all feel was from the best of TOS. TWOK may have been more exciting, but I didn't get the same sense of wonder and awe as from the first film. Plus the uniforms were too militaristic. I wonder if I'll live long enough to see homemade fan videos using photo-realistic CG, able to perfectly recreate the appearance, voice, and performance of long dead actors. It would be neat to have a Star Trek or Doctor Who Redux, with continuity maintained and mediocre episodes improved and bad episodes deleted.

I think it's still Trek if it holds on to the thing that made it great originally, which is the exploration of the question of "what if?" I think the answer to that was given a lot of detail in this movie, probably even more so than ST:TMP or ST:TWOK put together, because we saw many new starship classes, the dock/station, the academy/HQ, insight into the characters' pasts...did I miss anything? Of course that's because these days the ambition, funding, and scope for movies have all gotten greater than 1970's or 80's standards, so imo it's probably good that we change with the times as well. And as for fanon, we get a brand new chance to make our own again!
