Overall, I enjoy the show, but several things about it keep annoying me:
The anachronisms, like everybody using Beretta pistols, Glocks, Steyrs, and even a Hummer. I for one am interested in how future/futuristic or advanced societies do things and what they use, so if they had put some more thougt and effort into that it would have been grand. I realize the use of real-world items is probably a budgetary consideration, but for God's sake...why use items that are so easily recongnizable? I don't think there's a sci-fi-watching soul on the planet that doesn't know what these items are. I mean, at least get the prop department to put some greeblies on them to make them look just a tad different? How long could that take, 20 seconds with some superglue and finding some greebly appropriate junk?
I think though it was seeing the Hummer that was the last straw.

Well I liked the original colonial turbolaser pistol it looked good strapped to the thigh in a fast draw holster. When watching this new version of Galactica if almost as if Hodgkins law of parallel planet development ;D is happening regarding the fashions technology and other materials. I guess the producers are doing this so that we can better relate to the characters surroundings like you I wished theyed put more effort in making the tech more offworld looking right now the civilians on the show could have come straight from thier homes in the civies and business fashions that they own. I figure another branch of humanity would have a different sense of fashion from us Well take care

You are so right, the original Colonial blster kicked ass! I can't even remember what the gun they have now looks like, only that it's not very impressive.

I agree about the anachronisms, at least disguise or update the looks of the various hand weapons. The appearance of the hummer was inexcusable.
The gunslinging pilots of the TOS BG were pretty cool, I didnt even think about that.

You may consider the use of these weapons to be anachronistic, but it has been explained.
The Cylon ability to influence technology was strongly alluded to in the mini series, and was clearly demonstrated when the more advanced Colonial Vipers were immobilised at a stroke.
It was also stated that the Colonials had to revert to more primitive technology to defeat the Cylons in the previous war. We also saw, that the likes of Adama were strongly opposed to the reintroduction of technology we ourselves take for granted (networked computers), so it does make sense.

But I still don't know how you can run a ship as large and as complex as a Battlestar without a lot of the computers being linked up somehow. I'd like to see them explain just what they mean when they say "networked"....

The more advanced Vipers had a "backdoor" into their systems, though. What I can't figure out is how the Cylons can magically hack into any network, no matter what its characteristics. To put it into modern terms, some guy on a "war drive" to hack wireless networks can't hack you if you don't have a wireless network...

MajorRacal I think you missed the point, or maybe I did: Its not the use of old tech pistols or internal combustion vehicles that bugs, its the use of such familiar earth weapons such as the glocks, hummer etc. that we all recognize as being earth in origin. In other words sure go ahead use bullets instead of laser blasters (as you said use of which have been explained), but at least make the pistols and so forth look like they were designed and built on caprica, not earth.

Well perhaps I did miss that nuance...

Nah your ok Recal - actually my use of the term anachronism was not really the proper one to use for making my point.
One thing I havent seen is empty bullet cases ejecting from the pistols, as if they are implying the use of caseless ammo: or is that something I missed?

They were probably too cheap to buy actual functioning blank-firing weapons...

You're right about that, although I think I may have seen people swapping cartridge refills. Where are the casings going?

Last nights episode I didnt spot any cartridge cases either, but I did notice for the first time that one of the rag tag ships is the old moving ship "We move anywhere" that you had built a model of, Atra.
Cool.

Yeah, it looks like they have just about all of the old ones, at least the ones that were the most recognizable. As you know, freighters are my thing.

Freighters are cool. Do you know of any websites that feature the vessels of the new BSG? I've searched without success....
