I plan more detail on the peripheries. Before anyone brings it up, I decided not to make it smooth-TOS-grey because if the "aztecing" is the basic pattern underneath the skin of a construction, I don't think there would have been much point in "painting" or "thermacoating" this one as the entire inside is filled with air that encases buildings and parks, like a mini Dyson-sphere...which of course acts like insulation. And windows on it are conspicuosly lacking for the same reason...because there are no rooms pressed against the outer hull, it's all empty space inside with buildings at ground level, which is the rim of the saucer. The extra details I can inlcude are more docking lights, and hatches in the appropriate places.

I don't know if I like the hatches on top fo the ring spheres. I urge you to watch the pilot episode of New Voyages they have a Star Base in there for your viewing pleasure. Unfortunately it is no longer available for download from their site. Atra, I post the vid that has the base in you folder for download.
Looks like the file was too big. I may have to pass it along to Major Racal, for him to put in up on his reference site.
NM, I zipped it up and its under 100mb, so I'll upload to your folder now on 4shared.

Question: After the Ournal-Class facility was completed (Space Dock 1), what happened to this TOS base? Would it have been decommissioned, or would it continue to be used?

In that case, i may have to eliminate the aztecing altogether in the area along the periphery, because if it's there it has to spread out if it's to keep consistent with the aztecing on top.

Yes, I remember that Starbase from New Voyages, but I have problems with it: 1) I don't even know for sure if this base is "Starbase One", only that it's called "Starfleet Headquarters". 2) Although the smattering of windows on it look cool, that indicates a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of the base as depicted in the Starfleet Technical Manual. This base is more like a Dyson Sphere and not like a K-7 or DS-9 for that matter with rooms under the hull. The hatches are as per the diagram...can you specifiy exactly what is not appealing about them?

This base is an "ecosystem habitat" of sorts, with hotels and parks and forest and cave areas inside. It's at least useful as a public relations place, a front for Starfleet, and the fact that it has ship repair/manufacture facilities is a bonus.

It just seem like it would be more 'believeable' that the ships dock within the outer spheres would drive straight out and in, not rise up or down via the z axis. Its only a minor complaint. As for the other crap on the New Voyages base, yet I agree that I don't like them, the only thing I was refering to was the outer spheres. But if its what's in the blue print, then who am I to have you change it. Go with the source.

I know what you mean, which is why I considered making this base rotate on its side axis, making it look like a big fat lollipop or ferris wheel. If I do that it would actually make it pretty unique, like this: Wouldn't that be a hoot to have in game? Maybe I should build a "Starbase One" version of this as well, more in line with what's depicted in New Voyages, and make that rotate the "normal" way since the internal arrangement would be different. But the SF Manual "canon" one is first though.

looks good, but i would increase the interations of aztecing by 3 or 4 and then make them a bit more transparent. I find that being a bit more subtle w/ aztecing makes it look better

Ah. . .a sideways wheel. Who in their right mind would attack from an axis where ALL the weapons should be able to bear?

Haha good point, this thing would be able to fry you with 6 X Ph4 if you're in the wrong spot, plus the photorps.

How do people like it cyan with "random" tiling as opposed to "aztec"?
